One of my favorite books as a kid was "Holes", where an innocent teen is sent to a detention camp in the middle of the desert to dig a hole everyday. The characters in the book believe that the first hole is always the hardest, until you get to the second hole, and then the third hole and so on. That is how I felt the first 9 days of this adventure, until I got to day 10. Despite biking through scenery that in my mind mirrors the detention camp in "Holes", I had the best ride of the trip. Maybe it was because my butt is finally resistant to the saddle and my skin cannot possibly hurt from sunburn anymore. Regardless, my paceline coasted through 4 different summits stretching over 80 miles to get into Ely, NV. This city is larger than Austin, but smaller than that of Carson City. Though there is more traffic when biking into towns, I love being able to pet dogs who poke their heads out at stoplights. Our team ate at a Mexican restaurant that was attached to a casino and spent the rest of the night playing basketball and watching the Bachelorette.
