The summit of Loveland pass has been said to be the best views of the entire summer, and it lived up to expectations. I rode in a paceline with Bruce today, so it was really insightful hearing his experiences riding across the US solo nearly 30 years ago. Our cycling coaches who live in Denver also came back to ride with us. It was only 35 miles today, divided between 15 miles of climbing and the rest descending. As we were cycling up the mountain, we passed by skiers from A-Basin going up on the chairlifts and down on the ski slopes. It was surreal to see both mountain bikers and skiers in the same vicinity. We finally got to the top and were astounded by the views. Take a look at the pictures below. It was the highest elevation of the trip at over 12,000 feet, and we were able to see snow capped mountains for miles. The climb led to a long descent, where I was basically holding onto my brakes for 30 minutes. The descent led onto a rollercoaster bike path in what felt like an enchanted forest. We then arrived at Rocky Mountain Village, where we would be staying for the next two nights. This is a camp for individuals with disabilities, where 40 campers are paired with 40 counselors for a week of fun. We got to participate in camp activities, including an impromptu skit where I was chosen from the crowd. One of the best days of the trip so far.
